“WaterWORKS” is a day- long interactive program for high school students designed to demonstrate the water cycle in a rural Ontario community. From “source to tap”, students will be exposed to the mechanics of pumping, treating, testing , distributing and measuring the amounts of water used to supply a small urban centre using a communal drinking water system.

 Session Descriptions

Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour

Colin Saunders from the Municipality of Brockton will lead us on a tour of the municipal wastewater treatment facility and explain how water is treated before it is discharged into the Saugeen River.

 Silver Creek Benthic Sampling

Saugeen Conservation and Drinking Water Source Protection will lead the session on inventorying “benthic” organisms (criters!) present at the Silver Creek location.

Saugeen River Water Testing

Shannon Wood from will lead the session in the testing of pH, suspended solids and dissolved oxygen in the Saugeen River just west of the bridge on the north side of the river.

 Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) and Skills Opportunity Showcase Trailer Tour

Staff from the WCWC will lead a tour of the Brockton facility dedicated to training for operation of municipal water treatment facilities and Four County Labour Market Planning Board Staff will lead the Skills Showcase tour.

 Body Mapping

Bruce Davidson will lead a short exercise making the connections between water quality and human health.

 Ecosystem Mapping

Ripples of Change members will lead this exercise to engage participants in describing their experiences and “aha” moments of the day in a creative (fun!), visual and hands on way.


WaterWORKS is one theme in the CareerWORKS bundle and is a project of the Grey Bruce Sustainability Network, a not for profit organization devoted to facilitating sustainability projects. As a social enterprise/business, GBSusNet contracts the fundraising for CareerWORKS and other projects to local contractors.
