Minutes of last meeting July 25th accepted by members who were present.
Panel Discussion: What does declaring a climate crisis mean?
Moderated by Liz Zetlin, panel included Dyan Jones, West Grey climate
campaigner; Scott Taylor, Senior Planner for Grey County; Hiba Hussain, Planner for Grey County; and Danielle Valiquette, Grey Highlands councillor.
Each panelist was given the opportunity to respond to the following four
questions:
 Why do young people – and why should we – care about the effects of climate change?
 Why is the need for climate change mitigation and adaptation a municipal issue?
 What can municipalities do to support climate change initiatives at the provincial, federal and international levels?
 What is the role of a citizen advisory committee?
Approximately 80 people attended and the Q and A that followed moderated by Liz Zetlin and David Walton, lasted about 40 minutes.
CAT Committee updates:
 Waste Management – Goal is zero waste for Owen Sound: through the 5
‘R’ s which are refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot
–styrofoam densifier (in Walkerton) is now operational and looking for potential users
– next meeting for this group is Thursday Aug 29th at Harmony Centre, O.S. at 7 PM.

 Communications/Political Action – with aim to develop improved
relationship with City of Owen Sound councilors and staff, invited staff
representatives to our next meeting to educate us on initiatives already
adopted by the City related to climate mitigation/adaptation – date of this
meeting tba – organized panel discussion for this meeting tonight

  • student petition (with approx 600 signatures so far) has been taken up by members of this group, who wish to be well-informed about
    challenges Council faces before presenting petition
  • next meeting date to be decided (Sept 5th or 12th ) based on availability of representative from City of Owen Sound
    Renewable Energy: – new working group starting up and looking for
    members – emerging plan is to highlight by example what already exists in local area/current renewable energy use; to educate about electric vehicles; and to promote installation of needed infrastructure
    Youth Group: – initial meeting/gathering took place yesterday (Aug 21 st ) at Harmony Centre– initial plan is to work with school authorities/teachers with regards to support for student activism – several pages of ideas were generated – another meeting is planned for September – on instagram: OS.youthagainstclimatechange
    Suggestion a committee – CAT is open to generation of more working
    groups:
     Bicycling – to promote bicycle friendly community in Owen Sound and area – suggested by Logan Zvorygin
    Announcements:
     Green New Deal All Candidates Meeting will take place at Harmony Centre on Sept 10 th , 7 to 9 PM.
     Proposal to coordinate Letter Writing Network through Climate Action Team – needs people who can commit to writing one letter/month – contact Michael Craig
     Harmony Centre: Reminder that cost for meeting space is donation from each person of minimum of $2 .

Next meeting will be Thursday Sept 19 th 7 PM at Harmony Centre

  • CAT GBOS will continue to meet monthly on 3rd Thursdays.
    Sub-groups continue to arrange their meetings in between or could meet half an hour before start of monthly meeting.
