Stewardship and River Rehab Workshop on Earth Day!

COME share Earth Day with us and enjoy a day long program of information, networking and learn about volunteerism and works in and around the Saugeen Watershed and beyond.

 Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority with support from Bruce Power are pleased to present a Community Stewardship and River Rehabilitation Workshop that will showcase projects in our area, and to learn techniques used in some other areas.  This is a community forum with the hopes of building knowledge and networking.

Those welcome to attend are community groups, municipal staff, Conservation Authorities, volunteers and general public who are interested in hearing about stewardship projects in Southwestern Ontario, and to get some ideas of what community volunteers can do for instream rehabilitation and stewardship activities.

 When: Friday April 22, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Elmwood Community Centre, 38 Concession 10, Elmwood.

The morning keynote speaker will be Jack Imhof, National Biologist with Trout Unlimited Canada, on how to approach river rehabilitation and a systems approach to community instream projects.  Speakers will share their projects completed both in stream and other stewardship areas.

 Topics will include:

  • Lockerby Dam Decommissioning;
  • McCullough Lake Association bringing harden shorelines to a natural state;
  • Work of the Beaver River Watershed Initiative and Lake Huron Fishing Club;
  • What the Grey Bruce Sustainability Network can do for you;
  • Friends of the Saugeen local community initiative;
  • And more…

Riverstone Retreat, Durham

This is the 3rd in an ongoing series of Sustainable Living Workshops (SLW) that are designed to exposed participants to various aspects of “sustainable living” through hands on participation in workshop sessions hosted by skilled professionals in their respective fields. Earlier SLW’s have included themes like straw bale building construction, off grid living, food prep (using what you have!), Friction Fire; Wood Fired Bread ovens and coffee roasting as well as growing your own!

Our next workshop will be focused on “Sustainable Building Techniques” specifically the use of clay and straw as a building material. The site for the workshop is Riverstone Retreat, just west of Durham Ontario which is a living example of “sustainable” building. Their “eco-nest” demonstrates how alternative techniques and materials can be used to create modern, energy efficient, low carbon and healthy building structures.

Workshop Elements

  • Tour of Riverstone with Host Ernie Martin, Owner, Builder, Visionary. Includes”
    • EcoNest, Forest Labyrinth, Stack Wall Washroom Facility; Central Solar Hot Water Plant; Main Lodge; Gardens;
  • Theoretical and “Hands on” sessions with Ernie, Josh Thornton; Clay cob construction of “child’s playhouse” as well as “wattle and dab” fence/wall structure.
  • Lunch provided!
